Forensics and Liberal Arts

Hey Everyone.

So I thought I’d discuss a “fun” topic, and I quote “fun”, because most student don’t seem to enjoy Liberal Arts. So you might say, well what does Liberal arts have to do with Forensics? I thought the very same and honestly never really enjoyed any English courses, or ones that had lots of writing involved in them. However, if you’re a forensics student and plan to obtain the Bachelors of Technology in Forensics. Then, you better plan on taking at least four Liberal Arts courses, as that is the requirement for the BTech.

Now, Liberal arts might seem kind of lame or a class that many students seem to shrug off. But, I personally felt it improved my writing skills and critical thinking. I mean let’s face it, when you practice something over and over again you get better at it. So, when you’re writing reports or research papers it’s important to write in a standard form. I think this is where the Liberal arts have really helped many students. Forensics students will have tons and tons of research papers throughout the program. I’ve had a research paper for almost every class I have taken, and taking Liberal Arts classes has actually helped me write more effectively.

I would recommend students look at LIBS 7007, which talks about technology within society. I personally though it would be more about “modern” technology. However, I was somewhat wrong, and that’s where it got a bit tough within the class. A lot of technology talk actually comes from the past, such as how science evolved through dissections of the human body. Now, you do talk a bit about current technology such as ease of access to content. I mean we can now watch TV shows whenever we want at any time. Back in the day you had to watch the TV at a set time or you would miss your favourite TV show. However, now you can simply record it with your PVR, or stream it with Netflix.

I think the BCIT Liberal arts slogan is true when it states you will develop critical thinking skills. Being a computer crime student, I actually prefer modern technology than more ancient or older forms of technology. However, in LIBS 7007 you will learn a lot about ancient technology. A lot of it has changed how we do things now an example would be farming. The way we grow our good, the types of chemical we use, the soil and how we process it all. This is all something you will learn in LIBS 7007, as it is a form of technology we use to create and grow our food.

So, I hope this gives future students an insight on Liberal Arts courses. I have only taken 2 at this moment and plan to take 2 in the Summer semester. They might seem like a hassle at times or require tons and tons of readings. But at the end of the program, it’s going to pay off when you notice your critical skills improving. I personally learned lots about older technology, that really has evolved into our current technology we use everyday.

So when you struggle to attend the class, just remember that it will be worth it at the end of day.

Well that’s all for this week and more to follow soon!
